Housing developers may be asked to provide mosques

The Housing and Local Government Ministry plans to make it a requirement for housing developers to provide a mosque or surau at their facilities to make it more convenient for Muslims to attend Friday prayers.

Deputy Minister Lajim Ukin said these mosques or surau could be established in housing estates or shopping malls, particularly by Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) and government housing agencies.

A study would be undertaken before introducing the requirement, he told reporters after a breaking of the fast and handing over of donations to old and disabled people at the Kampung Klias Dua Mosque near here last night.

Lajim, who is the MP for Beaufort, said Muslims had complained about having to travel far from their housing estates to attend prayers in mosques.
