14-day ultimatum to remove AES cameras in S'gor

The Selangor government will issue a 14-day ultimatum to the Transport Ministry from today, to dismantle the two Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras in the state.

NONEIf the ministry fails to do so, the relevant local council will ‘help’ remove the cameras, according to a Nanyang Siang Pau report quoting state exco Ronnie Liu.

Liu reportedly said yesterday that the installation of the two cameras by the federal government in Kajang had not obtained the approval of the municipal council, as required under the law.

He urged Housing and Local Government Minister Chor Chee Heung and Transport Minister Kong Cho Ha to refer to Local Government Act 1976.

“The Selangor government (has also banned the use of) AES in the state ... because the system has many shortcomings,” he added.

Selangor became the first state to object to the AES on the basis that the Road Transport Department had failed to justify the merits of the system.
