Apologise to Nik Aziz, Azmin urges ex-IGP

Former inspector-general of police (IGP) Abdul Rahim Mohd Noor has been urged to apologise for calling PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat “father of kafir” (infidels).

NONEPKR deputy president Azmin Ali said in a statement today Rahim (right) is unfit to question Nik Aziz’s credentials, having been found guilty of assaulting PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim in 1998 and continuing to slander him thereafter.

“The shallowness of Rahim’s statement is evident and even ridiculed by the rakyat,” he said.

Azmin heaped praise on Nik Aziz as a veteran politician and Islamic scholar whose statements are highly respected by all segments of society.

Yesterday, Rahim had labelled Nik Aziz as “the father of kafir (infidels)” for misleading Muslims to believe that it is their religious duty to support Bersih 3.0.

“He may be recognised and respected as an ulama because of his credentials, but he is just another political animal who wants to maintain his power in Kelantan,” the New Straits Times (NST) quoted him as saying.

Meanwhile, Kelantan PAS legal and human rights committee head Hisham Fauzi said the committee will proceed with legal action against Rahim, since he has not responded to a demand for a retraction and apology within 24 hours.

"We regret that the NST and Rahim have shown no responsibility for the reckless statement. The suit will be filed in Nik Aziz's name," he said.
"We will also discuss further action."
