Home minister gives nod to Bersih 3.0

The Home Ministry has given the nod to Bersih 3.0 to proceed as long as they follow provisions of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2011 and caused no disruptions.

"The government does not view their plans as a security matter. In the spirit of the PAA we will not prevent them from gathering as long as no laws are broken.

bersih announcing 3rd rally 040412 leaflet"They can assemble, but don't inconvenience the public or disrupt public order," Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said at a press conference in the Parliament lobby today.
However, when asked twice about the rally organiser's plans to use Dataran Merdeka as the venue, Hishammuddin did not provide a direct answer.
“Talk to the police and find a more suitable venue that would not cause any disruption to the public. In the spirit of the law already passed, we want to give them freedom to assemble... We can allow but be realistic, on the where and the timing,” said Hishammuddin.

When asked if the Bersih 3.0 participants will be allowed to walk from KLCC to the Dataran, Hishammuddin stressed that no street demonstration will be tolerated.

Hishammuddin said that while the PAA is still technically not gazetted yet, the police are already operating with the spirit of the PAA in mind ever since the gathering outside of the Jalan Duta Courthouse for the verdict announcement in opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s latest sodomy trial.

“This is not something that we just simply pull out of the air or just for political considerations,” stressed the minister.
The Bersih 2.0 committee recently announced that its next rally for electoral reform will be held at 2pm on April 28, at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur.

The theme of the rally, dubbed Bersih 3.0, is ‘Duduk Bantah’ (sit-down protest), and will be held simultaneously nationwide.

The green NGO coalition Himpunan Hijau will hold its protest against the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant in Gebeng, Pahang, alongside Bersih 3.0.
