Nik Aziz backs ban on loudspeaker Quran readings

KOTA BARU, August 14 — Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat today expressed disagreement with the broadcasting of Quran passages through loudspeakers, saying the practice posed a disturbance to surrounding residents.

“We (Muslims) are only allowed to chant out loud during azan (Muslim call to prayer) to perform solat. So, I don’t agree if mosques use loudspeakers until it can affect others who are sleeping or are ill,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama Online.

Saying the action failed to consider the sensitivities of those within earshot, the PAS spiritual leader advised Muslims to respect the rights of their neighbours and to cease using loudspeakers to disseminate their readings.

Nik Aziz’s comments were in support of the Penang state fatwa council, which recently banned the practice of reading the Quran using loudspeakers at dawn there.
