RM40mil donation: 'Umno's explanation meaningless'

The government is once again urged to form a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to investigate the RM40 million donation to Sabah Umno.

This, according to Angkatan Perubahan Sabah (APS) organising secretary Kalakau Untol, will be the right and proper thing for the government to do to clear the air as the RCI is the only way to identify the truths behind the much debated monetary contribution.

“This issue is being widely debated by the public. Explanation by Umno leaders no longer have any meaning,” he said.

NONEIn Aug 2008, businessman Michael Chia (right, in photo) was reportedly detained by Hong Kong officials when attempting to board a plane to Kuala Lumpur with S$16 million (RM40 million) in cash.

On October 22, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz, however, stressed that Chia was never arrested in Hong Kong by the country’s graft-busting body.

However, in a statement today, Kalakau said the confession that the money was contribution to the party reflected “a form of corruption by a large organisation at the policy-level”.

“There have been many questions raised by various political leaders that have gone unanswered.

“The rakyat really want to know the truth behind the financial contribution, and the donor involved,” he added.

DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang has previously called on the government to form an RCI to probe allegations of the smuggling of foreign funds by Umno, especially in relation to the RM40 million ‘political contribution’.
