Rivers Network, together with other five civil groups, will hold a
nine-day roadshow across Peninsular Malaysia to win support for their
environmental struggle against the planned aluminum factory and mega dam
projects in Sarawak.
They hope that through documentaries, native music and dance performances, and sharing of their experience, Peninsular Malaysians and the media will have a deeper understanding of various environmental issues in Sarawak.
This ‘Sarawak Environmental Issues Roadshow’ is co-organised by Sibu Bersih, People’s Documentary Studio, Baram Protection Action Committee (BPAC), IDEAL and Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (Sadia). Malaysiakini is the official media sponsor for the event.
They pointed out that a series of Himpunan Hijau gatherings in the peninsula had shown that environmental awareness has grown stronger and fused into a vibrant democratic movement.
“The true meaning of the environmental movement or green democracy lies in environmental justice,” the groups added.
They claimed that since peninsula Malaysians have better resources and information, there is an obligation to help their fellow Malaysians across the South China Sea.
A convoy comprising of Sarawakians who face environmental threats, environmentalists and cultural performers will be holding their roadshow from Oct 10 till 28, touring Kuala Lumpur, Pahang and Penang.
During the roadshow, the convoy will also visit communities affected by environment issues, such as Tasik Chini and Bukit Koman, to establish ties and convey their mutual support.
