Police detain Sang Saka Malaya flag duo
The two youths who displayed the Sang Saka Malaya flag on Merdeka Day eve have been detained by the police.
KL CID deputy chief Aziz Zakaria said in a statement today that they were detained at the Dang Wangi police station at 2.35pm today.
The 24-year-olds are being investigated under Section 9(1) of the Sedition Act.
According to the statement, they may be released tonight on bail.
Both were accompanied by their lawyer.
One of the youths had earlier posted a denial on their blog that their act, that took place on August 30 at Dataran Merdeka, was meant to call for the replacment of the national flag.
"Zairi Shafai and I were the individuals responsible for flying the Sang Saka Malaya during the night of the Merdeka celebrations at Dataran Merdeka.
"Our motive was far from wanting to replace the Jalur Gemilang (national flag) to the Sang Saka Malaya as it is the Sang Saka Malaya that was changed to the Jalur Gemilang," the youth, who calls himself Serigala Selatan, had written.
Police had since Sept 2 urged individuals and witnesses to come forward to assist investigations as they viewed the incident seriously.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur CID chief Ku Chin Wah said police have received 325 reports regarding the incident and out of the 11 whose pictures were posted, all 11 have come forward and surrendered.
