A
court settlement has been reached in Taiping MP Nga Kor Ming's
defamation suit against Ahmad Sofian Yahya, who blogs under the name
sekupangdua.
In a press release today, Nga's counsel Leong Cheok Keng said under the settlement agreement, Ahmad Sofian has withdrawn all defamatory remarks made against Nga.
"He also made an undertaking to the court to not make any defamatory or slanderous statements against Nga (in suit) in the future," he said.
Leong said that should Ahmad Sofian renege on his promise, he can be held in contempt of court.
Contacted for details, Leong said there was no order to costs nor was there an order for Ahmad Sofian to apologise or take down the offending article.
At the time of writing, the said article could not be found on Ahmad Sofian's blog. The last article which mentioned Nga or the term Nga Komeng was dated last year.
In January, Nga filed the RM10 suit against Ahmad Sofian for defamation for the latter's article Panas! Bongkar Nga Komeng dan Pakatan Rakyat Menyamun.
How the issue erupted
The article contained copies of the Ipoh City Council meeting minutes in 2008, allegeding that the state government had intervened in the contract to supply lounge suits for councillors.
Pakatan Rakyat was the state government at the time with Nga as a member of the state cabinet.
Ahmad Sofian alleged that the council over-rode a decision to award the contract to the lowest bidder , awarding it, instead, to Ethan & Elton Sdn Bhd, a tailoring company in which Nga's wife Wong Seow Ching is a director.
Nga had disclaimed any role in the award, stressing that his wife was merely a sleeping partner in the tailoring company.
His party, DAP, had also accepted his explanation of the issue.
A month after Nga filed his suit, Ahmad Sofian filed a RM11 million counter-suit.
