One Merdeka theme for all Pakatan states

No disunity here except with federal government's 'Janji Ditepati' Merdeka day theme, Pakatan leaders say.

PETALING JAYA: All Pakatan Rakyat states will be using the ‘Sebangsa, Senegara, Sejiwa’ theme for Merdeka Day, its de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim said today, adding that this was proof there was no discord among opposition members.

On Tuesday, Pakatan leaders had told reporters that the ‘Sebangsa, Senegara, Sejiwa’ (One Nation, One Country, One Soul) theme would be used by the opposition-controlled states of Penang and Selangor, while Kedah and Kelantan would use “Terus Berbakti” and “Menerajui Perubahan” themes respectively.

The multiple themes had drawn flak from Barisan Nasional leaders, with many of them claiming that this was proof the opposition coalition was disunited and self-centered.

However the Pakatan coalition today decided to streamline its Merdeka Day theme in the four states.
“After referring to Pakatan’s council, the states agreed to accept Sebangsa, Senegara, Sejiwa,” Anwar told a press conference here.

“This is indicative of Pakatan’s state government’s willingness to cooperate, and the Pakatan council congratulates them,” he added.

Anwar also pointed out that Kedah and Kelantan’s themes had differed because the states had made their decisions before the ‘Sebangsa, Senegara, Sejiwa’ theme was announced.

“It is a good development as we are able to reach an agreement even though they had chosen their themes before the Pakatan theme was announced,” he said.

Disunity with federal government’

Kelantan state executive councillor Husam Musa said it was wrong to say that Kedah and Kelantan had rejected Pakatan’s theme as the only theme they did not accept was the federal government’s “Janji
Ditepati”,

“The only disunity that exists is Pakatan’s disunity with the federal government,” Musa said.

“The disunity is not political; rather it is because the government’s theme is too narrow, partisan and political. That is why we do not accept their theme.”

Husam however said Kelantan and Kedah would still maintain their respective themes as it was their right to do so.

“Every state will have two themes: a national theme and a state theme.
