Reveal number of criminal cases solved, says DAP

KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 — The DAP wants Putrajaya to disclose the number of criminal cases that have been solved, pointing to statistics showing that only 2.6 per cent of domestic violence cases had made it to court.


Its Serdang MP Teo Nie Ching (picture) questioned the low rate of solved cases, claiming this was the reason why many are deterred from reporting crime to the police.

“They think it’s a waste of time,” she told a press conference here.

Citing domestic violence statistics provided to her by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, Teo revealed that of the 13,862 police reports lodged between 2008 and 2011, only 360 cases had been brought to court and only 192 convictions recorded.

“After lodging police reports, only 2.6 per cent (of these cases) were brought to court, and only 1.4 per cent had been convicted in court. These numbers are far too low,” she said.

She acknowledged that the Home Ministry had revealed the number of criminal cases lodged, but said that it was also important to “provide transparent statistics on how many cases have been solved”.

“I urge (Home Minister) Datuk Seri Hishammuddin (Hussein) to not only tell how many cases have been lodged but how many have been solved, how many charged in court and how many have been convicted,” she said.

“Let the public know that it won’t be futile after lodging a police report.”

The DAP earlier today urged the ruling Barisan Nasional to make public detailed statistics on crime, broken down by types according to various districts across the country.

Its national publicity chief Tony Pua had also urged the government to come clean and immediately publish detailed crime statistics on a monthly basis, categorised by types of crime, by month and districts and make them available on government websites.
