One in two polled have experienced crime

One out of every two individuals surveyed by Malaysiakini have admitted that they, or someone they personally know, have been victims of crime.

Eleven out of 20 people randomly interviewed in the Bangsar locality of Kuala Lumpur yesterday admitted that somebody they knew had been a victim of crime.

Most of those surveyed also indicated that they or someone they knew were victims of snatch theft in the Klang Valley area.

However, only a quarter of those willing to be interviewed said they had personally been victims of crime.

A 27-year-old wellness coach, who only wanted to be known as Evon, herself experienced a harrowing incident two years ago.

Car window smashed, handbag taken

"I driving to work and when I stopped at a traffic light (near Overseas Union Garden in Kuala Lumpur), a motorcyclist blocked my car and smashed my (window)" she said. She lost her handbag to the criminal.

Like the other victims surveyed, Evon lodged a police report but felt that not much action had been taken. She only heard from the police once.

Fortunately for her, a Good Samaritan found her handbag and returned it. She lost money and a few valuables, but got back her MyKad and other personal documents.

Rozalina, 23, said a friend's car was stolen near Jalan Seputeh.

"It happened about three to four months ago and it has still not been recovered. My friend is still waiting for the car insurance coverage." she said.

Sound engineer Jurazuan, 28, said his friend was robbed at a parking lot in April, while walking to his workplace.

"My friend, who is a pilot, was robbed while in the parking lot, and lost his wallet and pilot's licence." he said.
