A matter of choice

  Hazlan Zakaria

We live in a time of hope, a time of dreams, a time of promise, a time of change.

An exciting time, a dangerous time, of opportune moments and perilous choices.

For we stand upon the edge, at the verge of transition.

A period oft charged with drama and at times, violence.

For the hand that has grasped power too long, is loathe to give it up without a fight.

No matter how undeserved its tenure and how overdue the changeover.

As the adage goes, it is the very nature of power to corrupt, and its rot absolute.

But despite the iron glove, the less than hidden suppression, they cling on so desperately.

Despite the velvet glove of their pork barrel policies, the genie is already out of the bottle.

As much as 1957 was the time for our forefathers to culminate their fight for independence.

All signs and portends foretell, now is our time to rise for liberation.

But once again they are dragging out the pork barrel, trying to sate us short term.

Throwing money and goodies into our faces, hoping to buy and lull us to submission.

While hired thuggery is liberally applied, to stem critics who dare to open their mouths.

To drown the voices of reform, those calling for change, for the bloated corrupt to step down.

But the distant drums are beating and the rakyat are slowly marching.

And the hills are alive with the call for reform and change.

The bells are loudly tolling, it tolls for me and it tolls for you.

For upon our very shoulders, fall the burdens of our age.

Our founding forefathers fought for independence, and later to forge us into a nation.

Ours is a fight for liberation, from the architects of our dependence;

To liberate ourselves from their politics of division,

to free ourselves from their yoke of subservience,

to rid ourselves of their culture of corruption,

to throw away the filthy shades of their indiscretions.

This journey may be long, it may be hard, but its reward would more than make up for it.

At the very least, if unlikely, we must bring the regime to its knees and force it to change.

At the most, and as their knee-jerk reactions bear witness, they need to be replaced in toto.

Some say that the devil you know is better than the devil you don't.

But the truth of the matter is that it is a matter of choice.

The ability to choose those who lead us is the very basis of our professed democracy.

It is the principle embedded in the very crux of our constitution.

Same as it is the choice of a government to rule wisely, or not so wisely.

It should be ours to decide if they are to stay on or leave.

Whatever devilry a new government may hide, at the least we rid ourselves of the present one.

They have made theirs in their fifty-five-year rule. Now it is time to make ours.

And if those we then elevate too fall into the selfsame pattern. they too shall face the same.

The power is in our hands, ladies and gentlemen, it is just a matter of choosing to do it.
