JUNE 14 — The Bible contains many incidence where kings and the
royalty of the BC era lived wanton, unGodly lives and were rebuked by
prophets or holy men.
A couple of examples would suffice: Elijah admonishing the evil King
Ahab for failing miserably to shepherd his people and Nathan who ticks
off King David for committing adultery.
John the Baptist was imprisoned after rebuking Herod for taking his brother’s wife.
What is crystal clear in Christianity, Islam and people of the Book
is that only God is infallible.
Humans, paupers or princes all flounder,
make mistakes and are constantly in need of God’s guidance and mercy.
In fact, probably the most serious sin in Christianity and Islam is
to put humans on the same level as God. In short, it would be grievously
wrong to elevate royalty or the powerful to a pedestal which no human
being can occupy.
We should keep this fact in mind during these trying times in
Malaysia where accusations of sedition are being levelled at individuals
who speak up.
Respect should be accorded to positions of responsibility in the
country but not blindly. Only God should receive our unwavering loyalty
and faithfulness and love.
