Penang not consulted over Perak LCCT

Building another LCCT so near to the present one is ridiculous, beside there is no justification to build one in Perak at all - 1Christians

The Penang government has expressed regret that there it was not consulted over Perak’s plans to establish a low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT).

In a press release today, Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng said that his administration will not oppose the Utara Malaysia Airport Terminal (Umat) if similar projects were carried out in Penang and Kedah.

“Kedah. In an era of budget air travel, a low-cost carrier airport is a necessity in all airports.

“By refusing to build the LCCT in both Kedah and Penang, clearly the federal government is motivated by partisan political considerations rather than commercial necessity,” he said.

Lim added that the federal government was proceeding unilaterally with Umat without taking into account the cost and economic viability of the project.

He pointed out that Umat will be located within close distance of both the Penang airport and KLIA, and the project might cause negative impact on the existing airports in Penang and Kedah.

According to Perak government-owned peraknews.com, Perak menteri besar Zambry Abdul Kadir said that Umat will not affect its northern neighbours and was necessary to stimulate growth in Perak.

The news portal also reported that the Umat was likely to be established somewhere within the vicinity of Parit Buntar, a town which is about a kilometre south from the Penang border and about 1.5 kilometre west from the Kedah border.

Zambry said that proposed routes for Umat will mostly cater for the Asean market, focussing on Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam.

“The airport will allow better access for travellers and the business community between Perak and these countries and vice-versa,” said Zambry.
