Bersih has reiterated its call for UN special rapporteurs to carry out
their own independent investigations on allegations of police brutality
during the Bersih 3.0 rally on April 28.
They want Frank La Rue, rapporteur on the promotion and the protection
of the right to freedom and expression, and Maina Kiai, rapporteur on
the right to freedom of assembly and of association, “to carry out their
own independent investigations and to present their report to the
Malaysian people and to the international community.”
Speaking at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today, Bersih’s steering
committee added that 75 individuals have so far contacted them alleging
police brutality during the mammoth rally for clean and fair elections.
The coalition for electoral reform also repeated its calls for the
formation of an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission
(IPCMC), and for Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) to conduct a
public inquiry.
