Penang CM reiterates quitting if proven wrong

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng again offered to quit from politics today if there is evidence that the sale of the Bayan Mutiara Land in the state was done through negotiation instead of an open tender.

He said the company, Ivory Properties Group Berhad (IPGB) has maintained that it won the bidding for the 41.5ha of land in Bayan Mutiara near George Town in an open competitive tender by the Penang government.

"He (Penang Umno chairperson Zainal Abidin Osman) already has the proof. The proof is the statement by Bursa Malaysia.

"He had shown the proof but this was refuted by Ivory. His proof is a statement made by Ivory, but today, Ivory stated that it secured the tender openly," he said.

He said this when asked to comment on Zainal's challenge for Lim to quit from politics, saying that he had evidence that the 41.5 ha piece of land was sold for RM1.1 billion through negotiations to Ivory Group.

"I was the one who posed the challenge. I had said that if they can prove that I did not call for an open tender, I will retire from politics.
"But if they cannot prove it, then they must retire," he told reporters after the debate with MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek on 'Chinese at a Crossroads. Is the two Party System Becoming a Two Race System?' yesterday.

The land is deemed very valuable and strategically located as it is near the Penang Bridge, Free Trade Zone and the Penang International Airport.
